You Can't Dodge This: The SUV Is Back
By M.J. Yue
"There’s Something About Mary” launched Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller's careers as movie leads. It also launched the mid-sized Dodge Durango SUV. Instantly popular with women, the Durango soon rivaled the Ford Explorer as the best selling SUV.

Since that time, the next generation mid sized SUV evolved in to bigger, brawnier products. The second generation was known more for it’s Hemi V-8 rather than it’s previous user-friendly design. That Durango was one of the victims of the latest artificial “gas crisis”, when $5.00 a gallon gas made driving a Durango unaffordable. The incompetent Cerebus owners and equally clueless Chrysler leadership dropped the Durango right after they launched competitive hybrid model. The incompetent owners and GE-educated CEO were more proof that unique management and leadership qualities are needed to succeed in the automotive market.  The investment banker and GE-educated leaders are now known for leading once-vibrant companies in to bankruptcy.

Fortunately, the true believers within Dodge were planning and designing a new Durango during those dark times.  After Fiat CEO reviewed the Chrysler product plans after purchasing the company, he immediately “green lighted” the new Durango.

Unlike the rest of the new SUVs, the new Dodge Durango is a truck based SUV rather than the typical “crossover” car based vehicle. The Durango is built to haul items that are popular with active Antelope Valley families, such as boats, campers, motorcycles, or other cars.  Unlike the past models, the new Durango is powered by a powerful direct injection, variable valve timing V-6. Producing 290 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque, this V-6 allows the Durango to tow up to 6200 lbs, while still achieving outstanding fuel economy. And for those of you V-8 fans, the famous Hemi V-8 is still available, which produces 360 horsepower and 390 foot pounds of torque.

The first generation Durango was known for it’s balanced performance, outstanding handling, and smooth ride. The new third generation Durango went back to that winning combination.  The result is an SUV that is equally popular with both genders and for all ages.

Our test vehicle was the mid range “Crew” model – ideal for active outdoor Antelope Valley families.  Nicely equipped with navigation, power windows, satellite radio, power brakes, running boards, roof rack, 20-inch chrome wheels, 3 interior power outlets, and third row seat, our test vehicle retails for $40,000.

We put the Durango through the typical Antelope Valley family weekend paces, including trips to Home Depot and Costco, kid hauling, as well as a day trip down below. You can imagine our surprise when we filled the tank and discovered that we averaged 21 miles per gallon!

The 2012 Dodge Durango is a new generation SUV that gives the owners all the desirable SUV attributes but is affordable to own and operate.  For that reason, we’re sure that we’ll see a large new of new Durangos in the Antelope Valley, no doubt hauling boast, trailers, campers, and cars.
