They came from Acton, Lake L.A., Lancaster, Palmdale and other parts of the Antelope Valley to compete in the tournament sponsored by Twin Lakes Community Church and the AV Chess House which operates under an MOU with the non-profit Grace Resource Center.
Before each round of the tournament began, the children received a short presentation from Daa Anne Mahowald on how one chess piece moves and an introduction to a Chess Mini-Game using that chess piece. Then they had immediate, hands-on practice with that chess piece through a fun tournament using that Chess Mini-Game.
An Awards Ceremony was included in the tournament. Each child received a Participation Certificate and a Spinner Medallion.
Additional certificates
included two Good Sportpeopleship winners as well as 1st and 2nd Place in each
of the six Chess Mini-Games.
In addition to the tournament, each child was entered into a free drawing which gave away six chess sets donated by the AV Chess House and two children’s bikes donated by Twin Lakes Community Church.
