Deputy DA Looks To Do More For His Community
AV News staff report
SANTA CLARITA - Taking down two members of a Mexican drug cartel was all in a day’s work for Deputy District Attorney Jon Hatami. The recent prosecution and convictions of two members of the Sinaloa Drug Cartel made the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys safer. One member of the cartel received 50 years to life and the other 62 years to life in the state prison, for numerous charges including the sale of heroin and methamphetamine and conspiracy to commit murder.

Now Hatami wants to do more for his community. However, it means he is stepping into a new arena – the political arena. Hatami has filed to run for election to a seat on the Santa Clarita City Council. And he has many supporters, including Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris.

“Jon’s only interest is in the public good, protecting our citizens, and reducing crime. He will undoubtedly work hard for what is right for the future of Santa Clarita, not his future
in Santa Clarita,” Parris said.

Hatami was born in New York City but when he was five-years-old, his family moved to the San Fernando Valley and then Santa Clarita Valley in 1983. He attended and graduated from Canyon High School in 1987, and currently lives in Canyon Country with my wife, Roxanne, who is a deputy sheriff on patrol in Santa Clarita Valley. After completing two enlistments in the US Army, one as a Light Infantry soldier, and another in the Military Police Corps, Hatami was honorably discharged in 1996 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He went back to College of the Canyons, and then on to California State University Northridge. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts, he attended law school at the University of Nebraska College of Law. After graduating law school, he clerked for Judge Sievers of the Nebraska Court of Appeals. Hatami has an Associate of Science (highest honors) in Criminal Justice from Monterey Peninsula College, a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from California State University Northridge in Sociology/Criminology, and a Juris Doctorate (with distinction) from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He has passed four bar exams (California, Nebraska, New York, and New Jersey).

As a Deputy District Attorney for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Hatami works as a felony trial attorney in the Antelope Valley Branch Office, prosecuting serious and violent felons, many of whom are gang members.

“Jon has been a prosecutor in the Antelope Valley for the last four years. In adult court, he has convicted some very serious gang members, helping to make Lancaster and Palmdale a safer place for our families to live,” Parris said.

Hatami works hand-in-hand with the deputy sheriffs and has an excellent reputation with the law enforcement community. Not only has he prosecuted serious and violent felons, he also spent a year in juvenile court in Lancaster, Parris said.

During that time, he participated as a judge in Teen Court, volunteered for Project Lead,
taught fifth and sixth graders about the criminal justice system in our schools, and donated his time at job fairs talking about what it means to be a Deputy District Attorney.

“He is definitely not a career politician, but a citizen. I am endorsing Jon because he cares about Antelope Valley and he will apply the same passion and hard work to Santa Clarita families,” Parris said.

Hatami said that he began thinking of what he could do for his community about three years ago after his mother was run over by a drunk driver.

“She almost died. The person who committed this crime was prosecuted and recently sent to prison. It took time, but my Mom recovered. I feel that this life-changing event gave me time to reflect on my life and what I can bring to my community,” Hatami said.

“I’m a conservative, running on a pro-family, anticrime platform. The majority of the men and women in my campaign are deputy sheriff’s, police officers, district attorney investigators, and deputy district attorneys, including my two campaign managers, Josh and Gabe. I care about issues that matter to us, like protecting our community and way of life, sensible growth, strengthening our public schools, guiding our youth, reducing crime, and removing hazards like CEMEX and Whittaker/Bermite.

“I’ve seen how crime affects our city and valley; I have prosecuted numerous serious and violent felons, the majority of which were gang cases. I constantly hear about crime statistics, but it is my belief that a murder victim, a victim of a heroin overdose, or a victim of child abuse or sexual assault is not a statistic, they are people!” Hatami stated.

“Santa Clarita is such a great city. I want to keep it that way,” he stated.
